Miwa Kyusetsu XI, the 11th-generation head of the Miwa Kiln in Hagi, Yamaguchi, was a renowned ceramic artist recognised as a Living National Treasure in 1983 for his mastery of Hagi ware. He studied under his elder brother, the 10th Kyusetsu, and Kawakita Handeishi at Chitose Kiln in Mie Prefecture. Kyusetsu was known for his distinctive use of coarse, sand-mixed clay and thick white ash glazes, particularly his "oni Hagi" (devil Hagi) glaze, developed in the 1980s. His work earned numerous accolades, including the Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon (1976), the Order of the Sacred Treasure (1982), and the Order of the Rising Sun (1990). In 2003, he adopted the name "Jusetsu Miwa" and passed on the 12th Kyusetsu title to his son, Ryusaku. His innovative approach to Hagi pottery solidified his legacy in Japan’s ceramic tradition.
